It's almost pumpkin season again and we are getting ready for Turua School's Giant Pumpkin Competition 2023. The Garden to Table kids have been busy over the last couple of weeks sowing and watering giant pumpkin seeds
We've sourced some great Atlantic Giant seeds and are also quite excited to be growing some 'Turua Giant' seedlings too!
These seeds have been harvested and saved by the kids from the massive winner last season - 139kgs, grown by the Fisher family! Now, we can't be sure what size pumpkin these might throw as pumpkins are great cross-pollinators but we reckon it's worth a bit of a chance.
You can grow either or why not both?!
“We had the most amazing experience with our guide on the mine tour and wonderful ladies at the information centre today. Incredibly knowledgeable on their subjects and very good with customers.” – Zarsha Osborne
“I visited the Waihi Gold Museum and absolutely LOVED it. As a mild museum fan I can hand on heart recomment you experience it. The best museum I’ve been to by far.
The displays were interesting and highly interactive and the staff were fabulous.
Do not think twice – it’s a must see!” – Emma Lange

Creative Coromandel is the central arts network for the Coromandel Peninsula
and the Hauraki rohe. We put the Arts first.
The Coromandel Peninsula is a vast, beautiful region filled with pockets of
stunning scenery, wild terrain and an abundance of talented creatives
offering unique performing and visual arts experiences.
In 2015, driven by the Thames-Coromandel arts sector, a District-wide arts strategy was created through consultation with artists, art leaders and arts groups, to develop, promote and sustain local artists and arts activities. In 2016 the Arts & Creative Industries Strategy was adopted by TCDC and an Advisory Board with representation from all five wards was formed to implement it.
Fast forward 5 years and this Advisory Board is now He Mana Toi Moehau Trust, commonly known as Creative Coromandel – an independent charitable trust, made up of visual artists, performing artists and arts leaders.
Our Board are all arts passionate local volunteers committed to advocating for and championing the arts in the Thames-Coromandel District and Hauraki rohe and our mahi is supported by two local paid part-time contractors.

“Today we came for breakfast, such a warm cosy setting. For the first time we ordered the salmon with our herb scrambled eggs. Just wow! Always delicious and so many yummy options. Your coffees are the best. Thank you.” – Lauren van der Vliet
“We enjoyed a lovely lunch in the garden. The food is outstanding quality and excellent value. We loved the gift store as well, which is filled with a great range of edible items, books and gifts. We would highly recommend Colenso for a meal.” – Barbara Taylor

” This is our family’s go to takeaway outlet and dine in restaurant. The staff are exceptional, welcoming and efficient. The food is ‘to die for’ and the menu is sufficiently varied to offer carnivores and vegetarians a wide selection of options. Easy to see why TripAdvisor users show this as the best Asian in Thames.” – Fiona Ayers
“What a great place to gather with friends. The staff are so accommodating and friendly. Food just spot on as always. Highly recommend if you haven’t been here yet!” – Alicia Ngamane

During the warm summer months, our swimming spots
sometimes contain elevated levels of toxic algae.
So, we regularly monitor blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) levels and take
samples to check for bacteria along the Waikato River and in some of the
region’s shallow lakes.
Summer monitoring of the hydrolakes – Karāpiro, Maraetai and Ohakuri – started on 2
November 2022 and will continue until the end of April 2023.
Monitoring began on the rest of the lakes and river sites on Monday, 5 December 2022.
Thomas Wilding, Waikato Regional Council’s Water Science Team Leader, says it’s
“important that you use your own judgement before getting into the water. Algae
can accumulate rapidly around the shore, despite it being clear the last time
we sampled. If the water is bright green like pea soup, stay out."
"Extra care should be taken with toddlers and dogs as they like to put
things into their mouths and even a small amount the size of a 50-cent piece
can be enough to cause serious harm if eaten,” he says.
If you become sick
after swimming, contact your health professional,
and let them know where you went swimming.
2023 Senior A and Senior B Club Draws
After team changes to both competitions, both draws have required significant changes for the upcoming season.
Here is what you need to know
Please note that start times have been changed for the 2023 season to accommodate the extra travel times for teams travelling away. This is a blanket change across the board.
