Buying local is the best way to be environmentally friendly while supporting your local community. It helps stimulate the regional economy, creates and retains valuable jobs, supports families and strengthens community and culture.
A decade in the making, Russel Skeet's retelling of the story of John Read, founder of the iconic Read Bros Hardware, melds biography with history and serves as a valuable and fascinating story of the post-colonial development of Thames.
"I hope this story about John Read, a timber merchant, may add to readers' interest in the history of Thames - the business economy based on gold mining, timber, shipping, plus the connections between business and community leaders in the early years of the town. May this story inspire others to take a personal interest in their whakapapa (genealogy) and turangawaewae (ancestral home)." - Russell Skeet.
Resealing Starts Soon
From 1 October, we’ll be giving approximately 65 local roads a well-deserved refresh as part of our 2025/2026 resealing programme. Over the summer, 44km of road will be resealed across the district.
Why summer?
Warm, dry weather is the perfect time for resealing, so you might spot more work sites and experience some delays.
What you need to know:
If your road is on the list, you’ll get a letter before work begins.
Some streets may need to be closed to through traffic, but residents will always have access.
Work depends on the weather, so schedules may shift.
Your role in resealing
Fresh reseals need vehicles travelling at 30km/h to settle properly.
• Too fast? Chips flick off, leaving gaps.
• Too slow? Chips can stick to tyres and damage the surface.
Sticking to the limit keeps you safe, protects road workers, and helps seal the deal for longer-lasting roads.
We'll be closing State Highway 25 and then State Highway 25A in Coromandel in the upcoming weeks.
We'll close State Highway 25 at Boundary Creek on the Thames coast for seven days starting at 5am on Wednesday 29 October. We'll be replacing the bridge deck and repairing its abutments (the structures at the ends of the bridge which support the bridge deck).
We'll close State Highway 25A - the Kōpū-Hikuai road - from Monday 10 November during the day (8am-5pm) for about two weeks. This is a major rebuild, with two separate 1-kilometre sections being rebuilt, so it's not practical to do the work at night.
We’re getting ready for the Waitāwheta Road Rehabilitation. Here’s what you need to know:
Project details
Work is scheduled to begin on 1 October 2025 and is expected to finish in December 2025 (weather dependent).
• Rehabilitation of a 500m section between Waitāwheta Bridge and just past Pukekauri Rd.
• Works include widening, stormwater drainage, kerbing, new basecourse, and surfacing.
Traffic management (due to the narrow road and proximity to SH2):
• Mon–Thurs: One lane open. Access from SH2 available; detours in the other direction via Waihī.
• Fridays: Two-way stop/go traffic control may be in place.
• Outside work hours: Road open both ways with a 30 km/h speed limit.
• During work hours: No pedestrian access
Work hours: Mon–Fri, 7 am–7 pm (occasional weekend or night work may be required).
Outside of work hours, the road will be open in both directions under a temporary 30 km/h speed limit. Access to local sites • Hauraki Rail Trail – open throughout the works.
• The Falls Retreat – access maintained throughout the project – see their website for opening hours
• Owharoa Falls – closed during work hours (Mon–Fri).
• The Victoria Battery Carpark – remains open
The Seagull Centre is thrilled to announce that we’re establishing another Drop-Off Centre — this time at the Matarangi Refuse Transfer Station!
In collaboration with Thames-Coromandel District Council and Waste Management NZ, this new site will give local residents a place to drop off reusable, recoverable and recyclable goods, helping to divert valuable resources from landfill.
We’re now looking for 1–2 friendly, motivated team members to help run the Drop-Off Centre.
You’ll be greeting locals, sorting items, and helping decide what can be reused or recycled — all while working alongside the amazing Seagull Centre and Waste Management teams.

We’re fixing the Boundary Creek Bridge on State Highway 25, but we’ll need a short road closure to make it happen.
Since 2023, this small bridge between Tapu and Waikawau has been reduced to a single lane, creating a pinch point on this narrow and winding stretch of highway. That’s about to change and by December, you’ll be driving over a safer, more resilient 2 lane bridge.
To get the job done safely, we’ll need to close the road for up to 7 days in the last week of October, after Labour Weekend. We’re still finalising the construction programme and will confirm the exact closure dates as soon as we can.
With the bridge wedged between cliffs and the sea, there’s simply no room to keep the road open while we remove the old deck and install the new one. We’ll be using a prefabricated deck and our team will work day and night to keep the closure as short as possible.
We know this will be disruptive. There’s no local detour, so people will need to travel around the peninsula. But once the work is done, the bridge will be safer, stronger, and no longer a bottleneck – especially during busy holiday periods.
While this section of SH25 is closed, it’s business as usual across the rest of the Coromandel. You’ll still be able to get where you need to go – plan ahead, allow extra time, and enjoy travelling through some of our country's most scenic coastal landscapes.
Our bin collection routes are changing for efficiency. This means your bins could be picked up earlier or later than the usual time you’re used to.
Put out your bins by 7.30 am on your collection day
Leave it out until sundown
That way, your bins get their “time out” and won’t be missed.
Collection days are not changing.
If your bins haven’t been emptied, please report it to us within 24 hours so we can check truck footage (stored for 14 days). If not reported in time, we may not be able to verify the issue, and charges could apply.
Please note: missed bins must be reported through our official channels, not on Facebook, so we can log and action your request properly.
Call us: 07 862 8609 or 0800 734 834 (from within the District)
Want reminders about which bin goes out when? Download the free Antenno app, add your address, and get updates and reminders straight to your phone.
Thanks for helping us keep things clean and tidy.
So many people asked us from Day One to open in the evenings and bring something different to Thames. We have listened. Our philosophy has always been built on simplicity, focusing on good ingredients and decent portion sizes, with the goal of doing Thames proud. We are now open as an ITALIAN restaurant from 5:00pm until late on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Bookings are essential. Why Italian? Because Thames has been devoid of an Italian restaurant for far too long, and I love the food (who doesn't?)
